Welcome to CamelDNS TestRBL
What is an RBL?
A "Relay Block List / Real-Time Blackhole List / Registered Black List" (*delete as appropriate) typically is a database listing of IP addresses known to Relay SPAM/UCE, though not exclusively, there are other uses.
The purpose of the *List is to provide access to a list of IP addresses that a network can use to filter it's traffic, typically Email, and usually to reject it. However (as in the examples here
) you can also use the system to 'Tag' Emails that are listed in whichever RBL's you choose.
The merits of using any *List is at best highly argued throughout the Internet these days. We leave these merits completely up to yourself for deciding if RBL systems are useful, and whether the collateral damage is with an acceptable range, but you are obviously already aware of RBL's and their impressive collective merits and strength in rejection of confirmed SPAM/UCE.
Why create a Public Test RBL?
Simply because we found a total of '0' when we needed one for some extensive RBL tests. Nobody seemed to be visibly offering one where we could control the IP's being entered and when they expired. This is essential for testing to confirm any alterations you make to the scripts/code allow correct detection of the IP in a RBL. So we setup TestRBL.CamelDNS.com on 8th July 2004, and by the 9th, it was fully functional and we had written the code to allow public use, followed shortly after by releasing this site.
Adding and Removing IP Address?
Adding and Removing of any IP you choose is simple, and done in real time (watch out for your DNS Caches though). The Add/Remove is done through this simple to use Form
. You can also 'Check' to see if your IP is listed via the same form. Similarly if you include the link in any Emails you deliberately reject, you can also see a similar response to places like SpamCop.net
So how is the TestRBL used?
There are at least two answers, first there is outright 'Rejection' of traffic (usually emails) thats sending IP is listed in any of a number of Free and Commercial RBL systems. And then there is 'Tagging', which is typically used for Email traffic. If you look at our examples
and links
we show you some quick methods to implement and then test this. Though the TestRBL can easily be used with your own custom, free, or commercial systems your installing.
